Early history
Belarusans are a Slavic people who trace their national roots to the 9th-century principality of Polacak. Present-day Belarus was the central part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (Litva) until its occupation by Russia (Muscovy) at the end of the 18th century; the Grand Duchy was the superpower of 15th-century Eastern Europe, governed by Belarusan nobility through statutes of laws written in the Belarusan language. These provided unparalleled freedoms to the population and tolerance for a plurality of religious faiths. Torn by conflicts between competing powers to both the west and east, the Belarusan people lost their political power, but the nation, their language and their culture survived. Belarusan was the first language of one of the heroes of American Independence, Thaddeus Kosciuszko, who would carry the principles of liberty and freedom from the young United States back to Eastern Europe.
Reawakening, independence & sovet times
Through the 19th century, Belarusan writers and thinkers planted the seeds of national reawakening. On March 25, 1918, the Belarusan Democractic Republic (BNR) was declared. The spread of communism gave ample pretense for the political powers in Moscow to overrun the young country, despite many uprisings against the Bolsheviks. But the principle of Belarusan independence remained. As part of the Soviet Union, a Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic was established, while a democratically-elected government-in-exile preserved the legitimacy of the original BNR. In 1991, in Belarus’ ancient Belavezha Forest, the leaders of Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia agreed to dissolve the Soviet Union.
Belarus today
Belarus became independent as the Republic of Belarus in 1991, but true freedom and the full flowering of Belarusan culture and language have yet to flourish. The democratic development of the country was ended by the unconstitutional and dictatorial maneuvers of the current government of Aliaksandr Lukashenka, who also revived the policy of russification and blocks efforts to establish and promote Belarusan language schooling. BAZA continues today to provide aid and inspiration to Belarusans seeking freedom outside Belarus and in partnering with other diaspora organizations and the representative council of the Belarusan Democratic Republic currently in exile. BAZA keeps the dream of a free Belarusan nation and homeland alive as a hub of ideas, a preserver of heritage, and a home for Belarusans, friends of Belarus, and believers in a better future.
The Belarusan-American Association, Inc. (BAZA)
BAZA* is a fraternal organization whose members share a connection to the Belarusan (also spelled Belarusian) nation through ancestry or strong personal ties. The organization was founded in the United States in 1949 by post-WWII immigrants who fled war and repression in Belarus and wished to enjoy the opportunities for cultural self-expression provided and celebrated in the United States.
BAZA consists of local chapters across the United States in New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Connecticut, California, Washington D.C. and other locations. Each chapter is governed by a locally-elected governing body.
The Belarusan Youth Association of America (BYAA) operates under the auspices of the organization and provides special opportunities for education, cultural celebration, volunteerism, and activism by youths and young adults in the Belarusan-American community.
BAZA’s National Board of Directors guides the policies of the organization and oversees the local chapters. The National Board and chapters operate under the regulations of BAZA’s Charter and U.S. law governing non-profit and fraternal organizations.
BAZA members participate in meetings and other activities of the organization, pay membership dues, and received BAZA publications, such as the monthly newspaper Biełarus and the English-language quarterly Belarusian Review (https://www.facebook.com/belarusian.review, https://www.linkedin.com/pub/belarusian-review/aa/a30/46?trk=pub-pbmap) .
Our goals
- promotes preservation, advancement, and celebration of Belarusan culture and history;
- promotes contributions by Belarusans to American society;
- provides support to the organization’s members;
- informs American society and leadership about the history and culture of Belarusans and the state of affairs in the modern Republic of Belarus;
- advocates for traditional Belarusan values, democratic development, and respect for human rights in the modern Republic of Belarus;
- jointly administers the biennial convention of North American Belarusans with the Belarusan Canadian Alliance;
- oversees and contributes to the publication of books and periodicals on Belarusan topics;
- works with other U.S. organizations with respect to issues of common concern

Гісторыя Беларуска-Амерыканскага Задіночаньня (БАЗА)
Беларуска-Амерыканскае Задіночаньне была заснавана ў 1949 годзе ў Нью- Ёрку.
Першая падрыхтоўчая зборка адбылася ў чэрвені ў Брукліне, а 31 ліпеня ў іспанскай частцы Гарлему на 100-Іст вуліцы ў Мангатане адбыўся арганізацыйны сход, на якім і была ўтвораная БАЗА.
Закладальнікамі БАЗА былі Мікола Гарошка, Мікола Дарашэвіч, Уладзімір Машанскі, Янка Станкевіч, Янка Ніхаёнак, Аляксандр Орса і Міхась Тулейка.
У 1950 годзе арганізацыя атрымала афіцыйнае прызнанне з боку амерыканскіх уладаў.
Старшынямі Галоўнай ўправы выбіраліся:

Беларуска-Амэрыканскае Задзіночаньне складаецца з шэрагу мясцовых структураў – аддзелаў і мясцовых гурткоў ад Нью-Ёрку да Каліфорніі. Кожная структура выбірае сваю мясцовую ўправу.
Згуртаваньне Беларускай Mоладзі ў Амэрыцы (ЗБМА) з’яўляецца афіліяванай арганізацыяй БАЗА. ЗБМА гуртуе маладых беларусаў, даючы ім магчымасьць браць удзел у сяброўскай, культурнай і адукацыйнай дзейнасьці, як часткі беларуска-амэрыканскага грамадзтва.
Кіраўніцтва ўсяе дзейнасьці БАЗА канцэнтруецца ў Галоўнай Управе, якая складаецца з Рады Дырэктараў і выканаўчай Управы. БАЗА дзейнічае паводле свайго Статуту і амэрыканскіх законаў, якім падлягаюць некамерцыйныя і сяброўскія арганізацыі.
